has over 200 grants in the library including more than two dozen examples of NRSA fellowship applications (F30, F31, F32) written by 91吃瓜网 trainees that include original submissions, resubmissions, and summary statements. There are also a few AHA fellowship applications in the library. If a trainee is in the process of writing an application, they may review these shared grants by requesting access to the EFS Funded Grants Library. To support postdoctoral fellows at research institutions across the United States who have the highest potential for successful careers in chemistry and who will become the next generation of leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology.鈥�

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation听invites听senior graduate students and early postdoctoral fellows to apply for the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Fellowships has two tracks:鈥赌��
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical Sciences:鈥�听For听chemists pursuing advanced chemistry-focused research, including chemical physics, chemical engineering, and the chemistry of materials.听The underlying proposed research and innovation must be chemistry-focused, although the project can have applications in other fields such as biology or physics.
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical Instrumentation:鈥鼺or those chemists looking to conceptualize, develop, and build new instrumentation aimed at advancing research in chemistry, chemical physics, chemical engineering, or the chemistry of materials science.鈥赌�
It is the Foundation鈥檚 intent that the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship will serve as a catalyst, aiding in the fellow鈥檚 transition to an outstanding, independent research career in academics or in an industry/governmental laboratory.鈥赌疐ellows who accept an academic faculty or full-time research position at an academic US research institution听during the course of听their AOB Postdoctoral Fellowship will be allowed to transition their current program year funding to their new institution. Candidates who already have funding for their independent careers tend to be reviewed more favorably by hiring committees, often increasing the听candidates听value on the job market.鈥�
The Foundation will support up to 14 exceptional research fellows with $224,000 over 2 years for salary, fringe听benefits听and research expenditures; instrumentation fellowships will include an听additional听one-time payment of up to $200,000. Renewal for a third year, and an听additional听$118,000, is possible. As a matter of policy, the Foundation does not provide funds for overhead and indirect costs.鈥�

Qualifications鈥�听The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship provides 2-3 years of financial support for a scientist:鈥�
- who has completed their PhD by May 1 of the program year and/or has completed no more听than听18 months听of postdoctoral work by the application deadline鈥�
- 听who is a US citizen, permanent resident, or holds Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient status鈥�
- whose research will be conducted at a university or research institute; research at national labs and the like are not eligible鈥�
- whose research is broadly defined as within the chemical sciences; the听underlying proposed research and innovation must be chemistry-focused, although the project can have applications in other fields such as biology or physics.听听

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Webinar Opportunity
91吃瓜网 Research Development and Support is hosting a webinar featuring the Senior Director of Scientific Programs at the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, who will provide an overview of the below funding opportunities for postdocs working in cancer research. Following the Director鈥檚 presentation, a panel that includes two VU faculty who currently serve as reviewers for Damon Runyon along with one currently funded postdoc will offer insights and answer questions. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, September 1, from 1:00鈥�2:00 PM Central.
听
Programs that will be presented:
- Encourages all theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention including molecular approaches to cancer prevention for inherited cancers.
- Basic scientists must have received their degrees no more than 18 months prior to the application deadline date.
- Encourages scientists, trained in fields such as mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, and/or a related field, to pursue research careers in computational biology under the joint mentorship of leaders in both computational science (鈥渄ry lab鈥�) and cancer biology (鈥渨et lab鈥�).
- Basic scientists must have received their doctoral degree no more than five years prior to the application deadline date and may apply at any time prior to their initial assistant professorship appointment (or equivalent). Applicants must not have been in their Mentors' labs for more than 24 months prior to the application deadline date.
- Encourages all theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of pediatric cancer and the search for pediatric cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies, and prevention. The goal is to fund individuals who propose innovative approaches in either basic or clinical research with the potential to significantly impact the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of one or more pediatric cancers.
- Basic scientists must have received their degrees no more than 36 months prior to the application deadline date. Applicants must not have been in their Sponsors' labs for more than two years prior to the application deadline date.

Grant Submission Resources & Guidelines
All proposals submitted for external funding require the review and approval of the Sponsored Program Administration (SPA) for 91吃瓜网 (VU) and the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) for 91吃瓜网 Medical Center (VUMC). SPA and OSP are responsible for providing the official signature, electronic or physical, for all proposals submitted on behalf of VU and VUMC respectively. With very few exceptions faculty members/principal investigators, or their designee, are not authorized to sign or submit any form of a request for external funding that does not also include SPA or OSP鈥檚 official approval since awards are made to the institution and not the individual.
Direct-to-individual funding mechanisms (such as NSF postdoctoral fellowships), while not submitted through SPA or OSP, require VU or VUMC to be notified of the submission. The link to submit such a notification is provided below.
Before beginning the grant writing process, postdocs should consult with the relevant departmental/program administrator to determine if their current funding source enables effort to be expended on writing and preparing grant applications. Postdocs funded 100% on a federal research grant cannot devote effort to grant writing and should work with their faculty mentor to determine if alternative funds are available during the proposal preparation period to support a percentage of their effort.

In preparing your grant application please note:
- A postdoc may serve as the principal investigator (PI) of a grant, upon written approval of the faculty mentor and the department chair (VUMC) or the relevant dean (VU). There should be clear evidence that the postdoc has the experience and expertise to function as PI and manage the responsibilities to direct the proposed research program, direct the budgeted personnel, manage the budget, and ensure that the research is carried in compliance with all applicable University rules and regulations as well as those of the sponsoring agency.
- A postdoc may serve as a co-PI without prior approval, as long as another 91吃瓜网 faculty member (typically their mentor) is the PI. 听Should a postdoc leave the University, any awarded grant funds would remain at 91吃瓜网 unless otherwise negotiated between the PI, co-PI and funding agency.
- If an externally funded program听requires听that a postdoc be listed as a principal investigator (PI) or co-PI, no specific approval is required.听SPA or OSP notification of the submission is required.
