Advising to Fit Their Needs

Each undergraduate school/college approaches advising different. All offer academic advising either through assigned faculty advisers or deans. Undergraduate academic adviser assignments are posted in your student's .

  • Incoming Students

All incoming students must meet with an academic adviser prior to registering for classes. All students are required to meet with their adviser before registration for each semester to remove the Adviser Approval Hold, which will prevent you from registering for courses.

You can determine the kinds of holds on your record by checking the Holds section in . You can also find out how to have the hold(s) lifted and whom to contact with questions. The Adviser Approval Hold is the only hold that your adviser can release.

In May, advisers will begin reaching out to students to schedule a meeting. The window for incoming first-year students to register for classes runs the month of June. The date(s) students can register is dependent on their school or college. After the registration window closes, students will have the opportunity to make any necessary changes during open enrollment.

Log into  to see your registration appointment windows, and to view tutorials for complete information on using YES.

    Helpful Tips:

    • When building a schedule, students should consider meal times, walking to class, and built in breaks.
    • Students should be prepared with backup classes in mind.
    • Seats are held in certain classes to allow for all registration windows. If your student is unable to register for a class during their initial window, they can continue to check for availability. A lot of movement happens in classes through the first few weeks of classes.
    • If a class is truly full, students should get on the waitlist and reach out to the professor.
    • Encourage your student to be flexible and open-minded with their time and class choices.
  • Undergraduate Academic Catalog

The Undergraduate Academic Catalog is a great resource for students to explore as they plan their courses at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø. Students can view information on course enrollment and management, degree requirements, and various degree and program requirements for each school or college.

  • College of Arts & Science

All first-year students in the College of Arts and Science are assigned a pre-major adviser before they arrive on campus. The adviser works with you in your first and second years, until you declare a major and are assigned a major adviser. Students are not able to declare a major until their third semester.

If students have questions or concerns with their adviser, they can contact ASadvising@vanderbilt.edu or call 615-343-5495

  • Blair School of Music

New Blair students should read the  carefully and select courses before communicating about their schedule with Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs Brian Utley. Professor Utley is available for advising during the week before registration opens for first-year students. If you plan to do the pre-med track or a second major in science, you should plan to register as early as possible. You will have an advising hold on your  registration account; Professor Utley lifts the hold when your courses are approved.

If a student doing a second major or minor at the Blair School has questions or concerns, they can contact Prof. Russell Platt, Coordinator of Music as a Second Major or Minor, russell.platt@vanderbilt.edu.

Non-Blair students considering a second major or minor at Blair are expected to enroll in a semester of private lessons in voice, piano, or an orchestral instrument at the Blair School before auditioning for the program. Auditions for a minor or second major in Blair may take place at the end of the first fall semester as an undergraduate, if recommended by a private instructor.

  • Peabody College

For many programs, students are assigned an advisor during the summer/before you begin your studies. For other programs, students may not receive an advisor until a couple weeks into the school year. Also depending on the program, students may be assigned an advisor randomly or assigned one based on specific interests/concentration. Students will receive regular communications from their departmental coordinator and program director, including info about advising.

While many students have been assigned to an advisor who specializes in that student's particular track/concentration/area of interest, sometimes the advisor and advisee relationship is not a harmonious one. Students can:

    • Reach out to the departmental administrator for that department. This is usually a program coordinator or educational coordinator from whom students likely received emails.
    • Reach out to the director of undergraduate studies for that department, or, for professional students, the program director.
    • Contact the Peabody Office of Academic Services, peabodyacademicservices@vanderbilt.edu.

  • School of Engineering

Incoming students are assigned a faculty adviser chosen from the faculty in the student’s intended major. If a student changes majors, they will be assigned a different adviser from their newly chosen field. Students will remain with their adviser throughout their time in the School of Engineering.  In addition, the Office of Academic Services has counselors who serve as backup advisers for all engineering students. Although they do not replace the faculty advisers, they serve as a supplement for the advising relationship and help students find their way.

If students have concerns, they reach reach out to The Office of Academic Services at 615-343-8061 or engineering-oas@vanderbilt.edu
