Research Security Training Campaign Oct 20 - Nov 15

Overview

91勛圖厙 is moving from a rolling research security training requirement to an annual campaign. Beginning this year, all covered faculty, staff, and postdoctoral scholars are required to complete updated Research Security training by November 15. This approach was developed in coordination with all VU schools to make the training more predictable for the research community and to ensure VU researchers are meeting federal requirements for ongoing, annual training prior to proposal submission and throughout the life of an award.

Training Requirement

The training requirement includes one course:

  • Research Security for VU Faculty and Staff

Once you complete this course, you have completed your annual Research Security training. Completion data are are compiled automatically and there is no need to email your training certificate.泭

How to complete the training

If you already have a CITI Program account, you can enroll in Research Security for VU Faculty and Staff by clicking the automatic course enrollment link. Please note, CITI now uses VU Single Sign On (SSO) via Otka.

Information for Grant Managers

RIC maintains a dashboard to check training completion. To request access to the dashboard, please contact researchsecurity@vanderbilt.edu and provide your job title, department, and a brief description of your role. Access to the dashboard is granted by ADRs and managed by RIC.

Instructions on using the dashboard can be found .泭

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is 91勛圖厙 using an annual campaign window?

A defined annual window gives researchers a predictable period each year to complete Research Security training and allows 91勛圖厙 to verify compliance before proposal deadlines. This approach also supports the University's response to increasing federal research security requirements.泭

  • Who is required to complete this training?

All individuals who are engaged in sponsored research and all postdoctoral scholars are required to complete the training.泭

  • I completed Research Security Training previously. Do I need to take it again?

Yes. Research Security training is an annual requirement. As 91勛圖厙 transitions from a rolling training schedule to a common annual campaign, a small number of individuals who recently completed the training will need to complete it again during this year's campaign. We recognize the inconvenience and appreciate your assistance with this transition. The course has also been updated to reflect current research security requirements.泭

  • I see multiple research security courses on my CITI homepage. Which course should I take?

Please take, "Research Security for VU Faculty and Staff." Other courses will not fulfill the training requirement.

  • Do I need to take the updated training in order to submit a proposal during the campaign timeframe?

We strongly recommend completing the updated training before submitting a proposal during the campaign window. However, if you have completed research security training within one year of the proposal deadline, you may submit your proposal before completing the updated training. If you do so, please upload your prior completion certificates to the VERA record when submitting your proposal to SPA.

Note, you are still required to take the updated training by November 15.

  • Do graduate students need to complete this training?

Graduate students only need to complete this training if they are serving as Senior/Key personnel on a research proposal.

  • Does VUMC have a Research Security Training Requirement?

Yes, VUMC maintains a research security training requirement. You can find more information at the . For VUMC-specific questions, please reach out to ResearchSecurity@vumc.org.

VU and VUMC have harmonized their institutional training requirements to reduce the administrative burden on researchers. If you have a dual appointment and have completed the required research security training for your primary appointment, you will not have to complete additional training for your secondary appointment.

  • Is Research Security training the same as Cybersecurity Training?

No. These are two separate training requirements. Please see the Cybersecurity Training page for more guidance on cybersecurity training.

  • Is RCR training the same as Human Subjects training?

No. These are two separate training requirements. Please see the VU SERB IRB page for more information on human research protection training.

  • Do I still need to complete RCR training?

All individuals engaged in sponsored research still need to complete training in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) every 4 years. However, the RCR training requirement will become a separate requirement on October 15 in order to avoid confusion with the annual Research Security training requirement.泭

  • Who should I contact with questions or suggestions?
