Darwin\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>On\u00a0the<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Origin of Species<\/span><\/i>\u00a0put forth a\u00a0seminal and\u00a0revolutionary thesis for the life sciences\u00a0in 1859:\u00a0Populations with a common ancestor evolve over time with enough change to become different species that no longer successfully interbreed.\u00a0This process of descent with modification continues over time to produce lineages of new species. Darwin\u00a0famously referred to the process of one species becoming two as \u201cthe mystery of mysteries.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than\u00a0160 years later,\u00a0the life sciences are experiencing a second revolution\u00a0based on\u00a0the\u00a0newly appreciated knowledge that\u00a0all\u00a0plant and animal species\u00a0are stable or temporary hosts to a\u00a0microbiome\u00a0living in or on\u00a0the\u00a0body.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
