AI Best Practices

Start with a clear goal

Tell AI what you need help with and what you want to accomplish.

Provide context

Share the relevant background, priorities, and limitations that could shape the response.

Tell AI how to work with you

Specify whether you want brainstorming, coaching, feedback, editing, or practice.

Show what a good response looks like

Describe the tone, audience, length, or format you want.

Refine through conversation

Tell AI what worked, what didnt, and what youd like it to change.

Challenge assumptions and reasoning

Ask AI what it assumed, what it may have overlooked, and what alternatives you should consider.

Verify important claims

Double-check important facts, dates, and employer information with reliable sources before acting on them.

Protect private information and keep responsibility

Avoid sharing unnecessary personal information and make sure the final decisions and work remain your own.

Put AI to Work for Your Career

Explore sample prompts to help you use AI throughout your career journey.

  • Build Your R矇sum矇

Get help strengthening your r矇sum矇 while keeping your experience accurate and authentic.

    Try this prompt:

Help me write the professional summary for my r矇sum矇 in two or three clear sentences I could actually use.

The experience I can truthfully describe is: [describe a class, job, project, experience or strength]

The role Im interested in is: [paste the job posting or briefly describe the role]

Use only the information I provide. Do not invent achievements, numbers, skills or credentials. If you need more information, ask me one focused question at a time. Once you have enough information, draft the summary and flag anything I should confirm before using it.

  • Explore Career Paths

Use AI to explore potential directions and clarify what you're looking for.

    Try this prompt:

I know Im interested in , but I havent figured out [specialty, role or type of work].

Ask me one focused question at a time to help me better understand what Im looking for. If Im not sure about something, help me identify what I do know rather than making assumptions about my interests.

Once you have enough information, suggest a few possible directions within this field and explain what each option might involve. Do not choose a career path for me.

  • Practice for an Interview

Turn AI into an interview practice partner and receive focused feedback.

    Try this prompt:

Help me practice for an interview for [job title or description of the position].

Ask me one interview question at a time and wait for my response before continuing. After I answer, tell me:

    1. What was specific and effective

    2. What was vague or could be stronger

    3. One change I could make

Then let me answer the same question again before moving to a new one.

Base your feedback only on experiences I have actually shared with you. Do not invent experiences, accomplishments or skills for me.

  • Compare Your Options

Think through career decisions, tradeoffs and priorities without asking AI to decide for you.

    Try this prompt:

Help me compare two options based on what matters most to me before I make a decision.

Option 1: [describe the first option and what you know about it]
Option 2: [describe the second option and what you know about it]
My priorities: [location, type of work, growth opportunities, compensation, work environment, etc.]

Compare the options based on the information I provide. Identify the major tradeoffs and any assumptions you are making.

If important information is missing, ask me one focused question at a time rather than guessing. Do not choose an option for me. Leave the final decision to me.
