Welcome to the Houston 91勛圖厙 Chapter! We are a group of alumni, parents, families and friends of the university who celebrate community, collaboration and tradition associated with 91勛圖厙.

Our goal is to stay connected with each other and to the university through a variety of events such as networking breakfasts, athletic game watch parties, family-friendly outings to the Houston Zoo, and more. Make sure your information on is updated so you don't miss our upcoming events!

    91勛圖厙 Houston

    • Houston Firsts Houston was the first word Astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke when he landed on the moon. It is home to the first major freeway in Texas. Americas first public television station is located here.
    • Multicultural Houston There are 90 languages spoken throughout the area. The diverse population consists of 44.5 percent Hispanic, 23.3 percent Caucasian, 22.1 percent African American and 7 percent Asian. There are 86 consulatesthird largest consular corps in the nation.
    • Business in Houston Texas Medical Center is home to more than 50+ nonprofit institutions; the largest medical center in the world; U.S. energy headquarters with more than 4,500 energy- related businesses; and the Port of Houston, a $15 billion petrochemical complex, No. 1 in the nation in foreign tonnage and total tonnage.
    • Need medical help in Houston? Houston has one of the countrys premier medical centers in our own backyard. The Medical Center, adjacent to Downtown, is comprised of several hospital systems: University of Texas Health Science Center, Memorial Hermann Hospital, St. Lukes Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Texas Childrens Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Womans Hospital of Texas.

    Where to live

    • The Heights: Very popular, has become one of the most expensive and family-oriented historic neighborhoods in the city.
    • Eado (East Downtown): the "it" spot for nightlife, breweries, and townhome living for young professionals.
    • The Tunnels: Great for lunch if you work downtown, but since the pandemic, many retail shops inside have shifted hours or closed. They are largely empty on weekends.

    I live in the Heights and I love it; also check out Midtown, Montrose and Upper Kirby. 13

    Montrose and the Heights are fun places to live and hang out! Houston has the best food, too. 14

    Things to do

    • Professional sports: Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Rockets (NBA), Houston Texans (NFL), Houston Dynamo (MLS).
    • Theater District One of only five cities in the U.S. with resident companies in the four disciplines of the performing arts: Alley Theatre, Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony and Houston Grand Opera.
    • Museum District 19 institutions, including Museum of Fine Artssixth largest in the country and Museum of Natural Science.
    • Theme parks Space Center Houston is the official visitors center for NASAs Johnson Space Center. Others include SplashTown water park, Moody Gardens on Galveston Island, Kemah Boardwalk, Downtown Aquarium and Discovery Green Downtown Park.
    • Outdoors There are more than 165 public and private golf courses. Houston is located 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 30 minutes from Clear Lake, a 2,000-acre destination for boating enthusiasts. It is the third-largest pleasure boat basin in the U.S.
    • Volunteer YES Academy (founded by 91勛圖厙 alumnus Chris Barbic), Volunteer Houston, Junior League of Houston.
    • Major parks Memorial Park, Hermann Park, Discovery Green.
    • POST Houston: A stunning transformation of the old Post Office downtown. It features a massive international food hall and "Skylawn," a 5-acre rooftop park with the best skyline views in the city.
    • The Eastern Glades (Memorial Park): 100 acres of newly reclaimed wetlands and trails. Perfect for a sunset picnic or a weekend run.
    • Levy Park: The heart of Upper Kirby. Its a world-class urban space with a dog park, bouldering, and constant community events.

    Shopping

    Its a good thing you are coming to Houston to work, because soon you will want to spend your hard-earned money on all of Houstons fabulous shopping! These are a few of the larger destination shopping locations:

    The Galleria, Highland Village, Memorial City Mall, CITYCENTRE, The Woodlands Mall, The Outlets at Katy Mills

    You may not feel at home in Houston just yet, but your tummy will!

    Getting around

    • Two major airports: Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby. Bush ranks 9th among U, S, airports for nonstop destinations.
    • Metrorail- connecting downtown to the Museum District, Texas Medical Center and NRG Park.The Red Line, Purple Line, and Green Line now offer more connectivity through Eado (East Downtown) and the University of Houston.
    • Taxis- over 2,400 in the city fleet
